Best Day Trips and One-Night Escapes from Shanghai
π Under 1 Hour: Easy Day Trips Perfect if you want to leave in the morning and sleep in your own bed at night.
Suzhou (β30 mins) Think classical Chinese gardens, canals, and stone bridges. The UNESCO-listed gardens are the highlight, but just walking around Pingjiang Road gives you that βold water townβ vibe without needing a full itinerary.
Hangzhou (β45 mins) West Lake is the star here. Rent a bike, stroll along the water, or try Longjing (Dragon Well) tea near the hills where itβs grown. Itβs polished, scenic, and very easy to enjoy even if itβs your first time in China.
Wuxi (β50 mins) Set on the shores of Lake Tai. In spring, Yuantouzhu is famous for cherry blossoms. Thereβs also Nianhua Bay if youβre into serene, almost Zen-like spaces β a bit curated, but relaxing.
Jiaxing (β30 mins) Gateway to classic water towns like Wuzhen and Xitang. Expect canals, lanterns, whitewashed houses β especially atmospheric in light rain.
Nanjing (β1 hour) Former capital with serious history. You can walk the old city wall, visit the Presidential Palace, and explore the Confucius Temple area all in a day. It feels bigger and more historically layered than most nearby cities.
π 1β2 Hours: Weekend Mode These are better if you stay overnight and take it easy.
Shaoxing (β1 hr 20 mins) Literary roots and canal-town atmosphere. You can visit the former residence of Lu Xun, try local yellow wine, and sample the famously funky Shaoxing-style stinky tofu. Itβs compact and atmospheric.
Huzhou (β1 hour) Base yourself near Mogan Mountain if you want forest hikes and cooler air. Thereβs also Nanxun Ancient Town, which is less commercial than some of the better-known water towns.
Ningbo (β1.5 hours) Coastal energy with history mixed in. Tianyi Pavilion (one of the oldest private libraries in China), the Old Bund waterfront, and nearby mountain scenery give it more variety than people expect.
Wuhu (β1 hr 40 mins) Less on the foreign tourist radar. Thereβs an old-town area for wandering, plus Fantawild theme parks if youβre traveling with kids or just want something different.
Yixing (β1+ hour) Known for its purple clay teapots and lush bamboo forests. You can explore Shanjuan Cave or just hike through the bamboo sea β very green, very peaceful.
